Flaxseeds, Health Benefits, Ideas on How to Eat them

Flaxseeds are a superfood that fly a bit under the radar.  In this post you will learn about flaxseeds, health benefits, ideas for eating them.  Flaxseeds contain so many great nutrients including omega 3 fatty acids, soluble fiber and lignanas.  Lignans, What?  These anticancer compounds are found in plant based foods.  They help fight breast and prostate cancer.  Flaxseeds contain up to 800 times more lignanas than other foods.  Consuming a small amount of flaxseeds can give the body the daily amount of important nutrients.  It's the mecca of health food! Flaxseeds can also help regulate blood sugar, balance hormones, improve digestion and can improve the appearance of skin. With all those benefits, who could pass up this awesome plant based source of omega 3's?  The main reason why omega 3's are so important is they aid in brain function.  For many American's, the ratio of omega 3's to omega 6's is totally off.  With all the processed and convenience foods, it puts the balance of these omega's all out of whack.

Ideas for eating flaxseeds:

  • Add ground flaxseeds or flaxseed oil to a smoothie.
  • Replace 1 tablespoon + 2 tablespoons of warm water with eggs in a baking recipe.
  • Make flaxseed crackers (try this recipe, it's super tasty)
  • Make a smoothie bowl or over night oats and add a teaspoon or two of flaxseeds for an added nutty flavor
  • Use flaxseed oil when making hummus in the place of tahini
