I wanted to be the perfect yoga student. When the teacher gave specific alignment cues, I tried my hardest to do exactly as stated. Sometimes I would hurt myself trying to go deeper. I also worried constantly what everyone else thought of my poses. Going into a new studio or gym, I looked around to see what others were doing so I appeared to know the set up procedure. All of it got to be exhausting!
How can arm balances make your muscles stronger? The big answer here seems obvious. Holding the body up, while pushing away the floor helps the muscles engage and build strength.
I wake up most days with a tight neck, sore back and hips. Tight neck, shoulder and back muscles sure make moving hard. Especially when I’m chasing around a three year old all day! The most effective solution (for me) is doing a series of yoga poses. By picking at least one yoga pose for each sore area and holding the pose for 30 or more seconds helps release the tension. It even helps combat tension headache before they start.
Yoga is thought of in different ways for different people. Some think of yoga as a mobility exercise. Some say yoga is for flexibility and getting into a zen like state. Most people refer to yoga practice or asana (each pose is a asana) as moving from pose to pose and focusing on breathing in order to be more mindful. While all this is true there is so much more to yoga.
Being an athlete most of my life, I’ve come to relay on warming up before any exercise. Especially because I’ve lived in places where it snows. It’s been vial that I warm my body before a run. If I go without warming up, I notice a big difference in how my performs.

Core strength is important for everyday movement as well as during physical activities. A weak core for active people might mean getting tired or feeling over worked, faster. Again, it's all about that balance. Every muscle in the body is designed to help the body move and function at it's best.
